During 1981- 2010, he took a position of senior researcher at China Institute of Contemporary International Relations. In 1991, Ma conducted research work in India as a visiting scholar. His main area of research is about South Asian security and China-India relations. In recent years, Ma has published three books and more than 200 papers, on the issues including security in South Asia, India's strategic positions, China-India relations and great power’s policy towards South Asian countries.
